Strategies to Protect Our Offshore Nova Scotia

January 29, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

The Campaign to Protect Offshore Nova Scotia
and the
South Shore Chapter of the Council of Canadians present

“Do Oil and Water Mix? Strategies to Protect Our Offshore”

Confirmed panel speakers:

  1. Lisa Mitchell (LJM Environmental Law, Wolfville) will speak about the significance of “new generation” environmental assessment on offshore drilling applications;
  2. John Davis (Clean Oceans Action Coalition, Shelburne) will deal with “Regulatory Capture” and the impact of inadequate regulatory oversight of the oil and gas industry on the Scotian Shelf.
  3. Michael Bradfield (Retired Professor, Dalhousie University) will assess the industry claims of the economic benefits of the offshore and the implications of its locked-in nature for a transition to sustainable energy.
  4. Gretchen Fitzgerald (Sierra Club Canada-Atlantic) will give an overview of the history of activism in Nova Scotia (and Atlantic Canada) related to oil and gas development

The afternoon will also provide two short, informal sessions to talk with representatives from local organizations-for example, the Ecology Action Centre, Divest Dal, Sierra Club, and Marine Protected Areas. The last portion of the afternoon will be a strategy session when all participants will break into groups to focus on one or two strategies and connect with allies working to protect our marine resources and coastal communities that depend on them.

Free admission. Light refreshments provided
