Interesting to note that there wasn’t any mention of Pulp mills, coal mines, fracking wastewater that leaked into the bay from holding ponds or herbicide sprays that contain 47% glyphosate, or the amount of chronic lung conditions that could be improved by developing clean energy programs and subsidizing/promoting electric vehicles.
Chester-St. Margaret’s MLA Hugh MacKay took to social media Sunday to say chronic diseases are often linked to lifestyle choices, such as smoking, poor diet and drinking too much.
He said the cost of treating things such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and cancer is “a source of great frustration for our health-care professionals and for your government.” #nspoli

The biggest cause of heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes is excess fructose consumption. He’s partially correct.
He ran an apology for his rant in the Halifax Examiner.
Yes, consumption of over processed foods laden with corn starch and HFCS is a significant source of illness. However, prior to the 1980s, they were used in fewer foods and lesser amounts. Truth in labeling has helped awareness, but even those aware of the implications of food additives have few choices. And now, companies have caugh on and instead of listing HFCS, list “dextrose monohydrate”. Try to find ketchup, mayo, bread many other products without HFCS or corn starch. If not used as a sweetener, it is used as a stabilizer/thickener. Michael Pollan’s “if you can’t say it, don’t eat it” has much merit. So yes, HFCS is a huge factor, but unless you make/grow your own, it is hard to avoid without navigating the minefield of product labels and a more than casual acquaintance with Chemistry.
I consider the manipulation of our food to be part of what corporations and pharma have done to us, much as what petrochemical/mineral polluters have done. We are the victims either way.
