Get Fracking Out of the Budget!

Get Fracking Out of the Budget!

Hi fractivist friends,

Premier Houston's horrible budget is having the unintended result of connecting the dots about what the Houston government cares about, and what and who it doesn't. A lot of people who have not been politically involved before are speaking out. And many people are seeing the connection between cuts to things they care about, and money going to things they don't want to see - like Fracking.

Several members of NOFRAC will be speaking to the Public Bills committee about the Financial Measures Act. Even though it does not mention fracking, the Financial Measures Act is a general budget bill, and anything relating to the budget can be raised.

Public pressure is having an impact on the provincial government’s budget bill already.  The Premier has already walked back some of the egregious cuts.

We would like to encourage you to take a minute if you have time to make an online submission to the Public Bills Committee in relation to the Financial Measures Act, Bill 198.  Time is very short, but it is a time to register what you think. Even a very short submission may make a difference!

The proposed budget allocates “a total of $30 million, for the Subsurface Energy Research and Development Investment Program with Dalhousie University [SERDIP], to research onshore natural gas deposits and help ensure responsible exploration and development.”

$24 million would go to petroleum companies to cover up to 100% of their exploration costs.

Exploring for and developing onshore natural gas deposits means fracking. Can you think of a better use for $30 million?

Here’s the information for making a submission to the Public Bills Committee:

Subject Line:  Public Bills Committee re: Bill 198, Financial Measures Act.
Email to:    legc.office@novascotia.ca

You must include your name.

Your message could be as short as “ Fund [your choice here], not onshore natural gas exploration”  or

“Cancel the SERDIP agreement with Dalhousie.  Direct these funds toward [your choice] instead”

We have defeated fracking before. Let’s do it again!
