Gaspé is a place of majestic views and hardy people. It is also home to the McInnis Cement factory, which emits upwards of 2.2 million tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year — far more, incidentally, than the output from Shell Canada’s oilsands operations in Fort McMurray. What’s more, as a cement producer, Port Daniel qualifies for even more latitude when it comes to carbon emissions. According to Environment Canada’s new rules, the plant will only be taxed on 10 per cent of these emissions.
