A new report says there are just 411 North Atlantic right whales left of the rapidly declining species, in what scientists are calling a “significant drop” in the population.

On Friday, the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium released its 2018 report card for the endangered whales, which lists fishing-gear entanglements and whale strikes as the leading cause of death for these animals.

  • We cannot wait 2 years for protections to be enacted. Females are in the minority. Females have died in higher numbers. The stresses on females have effected their ability to conceive and carry calves to parturition. We must act now if we are to save NARW. If this means restrictions on fishing equipment and practices, so be it. If it means cargo ships and others have to have escorts by CG or other whale protectors in whale traversed areas, so be it.
